In recent years, the push towards sustainability and the transition to a greener economy has led to a boom in green jobs. Many of these jobs fall into traditional categories such as renewable energy, green building, and conservation. However, there are also non-traditional green jobs that are becoming increasingly relevant in the sustainability movement. These jobs reflect the growing understanding that sustainable practices must be integrated into all areas of the economy, including fields that were previously seen as unrelated to sustainability. Media & Journalism

Position: Environmental Reporter/Journalist

Salary: $58,318/yr

Description: Environmental reporters and journalists gather news and information through interviews and attending events. They generate story ideas and research background information. They also write clear and concise stories, edit reports and articles, record detailed information, and present news in print or broadcast form. Environmental reporters cover environmental issues including environmental racism, electronic waste management, and unsustainable fashion practices. Some common organizations/companies that environmental reporters and journalists work at include the Global Nomadic, The Narwhal, and Canada’s National Observer.

Qualifications: Must have a post-secondary degree (bachelor’s or master’s degree) in journalism, communications and marketing, or environmental studies. Position: Green Product Marketer

Description: Green Product Marketers develop and implement marketing strategies that promote environmentally friendly products and services. This involves conducting research to identify market trends and consumer preferences, evaluating the environmental impact of a company’s products, and developing marketing campaigns to promote eco-friendly alternatives. Some organizations/companies that green product marketers work at include Canon Canada, Toronto Metropolitan University, and BluMetric Environmental Inc.

Qualifications: Must have a post-secondary degree in business administration, journalism, communications, public relations, or general science. Data Analysis

Position: Climate Data and Research Analyst

Salary: $118, 670/yr

Description: Climate data and research analysts collect, analyze, and interpret data on climate change and its environmental impact. They use statistical and computational techniques to analyze climate data and identify trends and patterns. They also use computer simulation/modelling to predict future climate outcomes. Climate data and research analysts present their findings by writing technical reports, presenting presentations, and public speaking events. They also collaborate with climate scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders to evaluate the impact of climate change on the environment based on the data collected. Climate data and research analysts work at organizations/companies such as Electric Power Research Institute, Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions (BGIS), and Canadian Renewable Energy Association.

Qualifications: Must have a post-secondary degree (bachelor’s or master’s degree) in climate science, atmospheric science, environmental science, or geography. Must have experience with climate modelling, data visualization (Tableau or D3.js, GIS software (ArcGIS or QGIS), project management, knowledge of environmental policies and regulations, and data analysis.  Common programs for climate data and research analysts include the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science at the University of Guelph, the Honours Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science at Carleton University, and the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science at the University of Victoria.

Computer Science & Software Engineering

Position: Software Developer – Environmental Data Analytics

Salary: $53, 592/yr

Description: Software developers are responsible for designing, developing, and implementing software solutions for environmental data analytics. They will work closely with internal teams to identify data requirements and develop software solutions to support environmental data collection, analysis, and reporting. This will involve developing software using various programming languages and tools (ex. Python and C++), as well as testing, debugging, and maintaining software applications. Environmental software developers are employed at organizations/companies such as Hatfield, Aquatic Informatics, and Ecological Park Agriculture Inc.

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or related fields is preferred. Position: Environmental Accountant

Salary: $61,428/yr

Description: Environmental accountants identify cost-saving opportunities related to environmental compliance, design cleaner products, and account for the sale of pollution licenses. Moreover, they analyze data related to resource management, field research studies, and disaster evaluation. They communicate with stakeholders to make strategic decisions based on environmental and business information. They present their findings and communications by preparing reports and they assess a company’s financial value. Some organizations and companies that hire environmental accountants include Environmental 360 Solutions, Waste Management Canada, and GHG Accounting Services.

Qualifications: Must have a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Must also have credentials such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Financial Analyst (CFA). Universities such as the University of Alberta and Queen’s University offer accounting specializations through their School of Business programs. Common programs for environmental accountants include the Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies at Western University, Undergraduate Accounting and Financial Management at the University of Waterloo, and the Bachelor of Commerce at York University.

Finance

Position: Green Finance Associate

Salary: $79,375/yr

Description: The Green Finance Associate will be responsible for analyzing and evaluating investment opportunities in environmental projects and initiatives, as well as identifying potential partners and investors. They will also assist in developing and implementing strategies to increase the organization’s involvement in the green finance market. This will involve conducting research, financial modeling, and due diligence on potential projects and investments. Green finance associates prepare presentations and reports for senior management. Some organizations and companies that hire green finance associates include Ernst & Young Canada, Fidelity Investments Canada, and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan.

Qualifications: A post-secondary (bachelor’s or master’s) degree in finance, business administration, environmental science, or related fields is required. Corporate Social Responsibility/Environment, Social, and Governance

Position: Associate – Sustainability Communications & Engagement

Description: Sustainability communications and engagement associates are responsible for assisting in the development and execution of communication strategies related to sustainability initiatives, as well as engaging with stakeholders to promote corporate responsibility and ESG initiatives. This will involve developing messaging, creating content, and coordinating with internal and external teams to ensure that sustainability and ESG initiatives are communicated effectively. The Associate will also support the development of sustainability reports and other related materials. Sustainability communications and engagement associates can work at companies and organizations such as KPMG, Pinna Sustainability, and Green Sky Sustainability Consulting.

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, sustainability, or related fields is required. Social Sciences

Position: Environmental Psychologist

Salary: $90,997/yr

Description: Environmental psychologists investigate the interplay between human behaviour and the physical environment. They examine both natural and man-made surroundings, ranging from individual dwellings and workplaces to whole urban centres and geographical regions. Their research focuses on various aspects such as attention, perception, environmental preferences, and coping mechanisms for environmental stress. Environmental psychologists examine the human activities that contribute to environmental issues such as resource depletion and global warming, as well as spearheading the required transformative changes to promote sustainable living. Environmental psychologists can work at companies and organizations such as Lakeridge Health, FlexMD Allied Health, Bayshore Healthcare, and Cleveland Clinic Canada.

Qualifications: Must have a post-secondary degree (bachelor’s or master’s) in psychology or sociology. Some positions require a doctoral degree. They will also advise senior management on the economic risks and opportunities associated with environmental initiatives and guide strategies to mitigate risks and maximize opportunities. This will involve conducting economic research and analysis, preparing reports and presentations, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders. Organizations or companies that environmental economists work at include University Canada West, Environment and Climate Change Canada (Government of Canada’s environmental department), and the University of Waterloo.
